Lalitpur Hospital Conducts Mega IOL Eye Camps

February 14, 2005

A Mega Eye Camp was conducted at Ashok Nagar MP, 90 km from Lalitpur from January 27 to January 31, 2005. The camp was a joint venture between Lions Club – Ashok Nagar, the District Civil Hospital and HBM Hospital Lalitpur. The eye team performed 181 IOL surgeries.

The infrastructure and facilities for the camp was provided by the CMO of the Civil Hospital. The Lions Club looked after the publicity, logistics and transport of patients to the camp. The members of the Lions club worked together with the eye team and helped them in every way. The team operated 50 patients each day. In four days the team could do 181 surgeries with the help of the operating Loupe. They could restore the sight of many of the poor patients who came for the camp.

Sadna Suman is one such patient whose sight was restored after the surgery. Six months back she became bilaterally blind and lost vision in both the eyes. As a result her eldest daughter, who was just 16 years old, had to do all the house-hold work, apart from looking after her three younger siblings. Coming from a poor background, Sadna had given up all hope of ever seeing the light again. They could not afford the expensive treatment at a city hospital. Sadna came to the camp along with her husband to see what could be done to her eyes.

After being screened by the doctor, she was posted for surgery on January 30. The IOL (intraocular lens) was inserted under Loupe, and she was discharged on the 31st with the sight restored in one of her eyes! Sadna walked back home a happy woman.

Transformation Stories

The first time I saw Shiva was when she came to the Anugrah Intervention Centre for assessment. I knew from her smile that she was full of energy and wanted to learn and do more.
