Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA)

ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE
Emmanuel Hospital Association (EHA) is a large, non-profit provider of health care in India, having a network of 20 hospitals and 30 community-based projects spread across 14 states of India. EHA's comprehensive health services integrate essential clinical services with primary health care and community-level engagement to address the health priorities of the poor and marginalized people, and to facilitate the development of healthy communities. EHA serves the communities in rural and semi-urban areas of Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Jammu & Kashmir, Maharashtra, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Assam, and Andaman Islands.

Established in 1969, EHA has a forty year history of holistic work. The primary focus of EHA is to care for the poor. EHA serves through health, development, HIV/AIDS and Disaster relief & rehabilitation programs, investing in the health and well being of the poor.

EHA works in partnership with the communities, governments, community-based organizations and NGOs, at district, state, and national levels, to deliver the services effectively and efficiently.

EHA is registered under the Societies Registration Act 1860 and also under the Government of India Foreign Contribution (Regulation Act).

  • Provision of appropriate health care through 20 hospitals
  • Empowering Communities through 30 health and development projects
  • HIV/AIDS Care, prevention continuum through HIV/AIDS Projects
  • Humanitarian Assistance in natural calamities through relief and development projects

NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS

Hospitals Stats:
During the year 2008-09, 700,000 people gained access to health care through hospital out-patient services, 100,000 people received appropriate health care and treatment through in- patient services, 20,000 women in rural communities had access to safe and adequate hospital based maternity care services and had safe deliveries.

Community Health & Development initiatives:

  • Reducing disease burden through Health strategies that leads to utilization of primary health care services and national health programs like NRCHM, RNTCP, RCH (II), NACP- III, NMEP;
  • Building Learning Communities through adult and child literacy, vocational training;
  • Economic development & livelihood by linking communities to NABARD and rural banks to access credit and finance for income enhancement;
  • Stewardship of natural resources through safe drinking water initiatives, sanitation, water shed management & agricultural support, and land reclamation.

During the year 2008-09, 1.5 million people including women and children, benefited from projects that improve health and well being; got information that helped them prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and malaria; had access to education; gained access to safe water and sanitation; received help to start and sustain small businesses; and assistance to improve their crops and protect natural resources, creating sustainable solutions to hunger.

HIV/AIDS Care & Prevention:
EHA today is one of the important players of HIV/AIDS response in India. EHA provides HIV prevention interventions to a variety of people engaged in practices that put them at risk for HIV/AIDS. EHA works across 25 districts in 10 states through the hospitals and projects, other non-government organizations (NGOs) and community based organizations (CBOs).

During the year 2008-09, 18,000 injecting drug users, 4500 sex workers, 1500 MSMs, 1800 IDUs on drug substitution, and 3000 people living with HIVAIDS, benefited from HIV/AIDS care & prevention interventions.

Humanitarian Emergency Assistance:
With the growing frequency of disasters that affects the global community and particularly the developing countries, EHA moved into a wider field of response through disaster risk reduction, hospital disaster risk reduction, training and capacity building. EHA supports emergency interventions through Food aid, Nutrition, Health interventions, and Water & sanitation.

Major humanitarian responses include providing relief & rehabilitation to the affected people in Andhra Pradesh floods (2009), Bihar floods (2008, 2007, and 2006), Kashmir earthquake (2008), Andamans Tsunami (2004), Gujarat Earthquake (2001), Orissa Super Cyclone (1999), Kosovo refugees (1999) & Latur Earthquake (1993).

Transformation Stories

20-year old Ritu was on the verge of death when she was brought to the hospital and abandoned there. A month ago she had an induced abortion, which got infected leading to a perforated uterus. Ritu was an orphan and had been sold to a dance troupe by her uncle. The hospital decided to conduct the surgery to save her life. Ritu survived the surgery and despite a very stormy post-operative period she regained her health.
