EMMANUEL HEALTHCARE - UK

About Us
EMMS International and Emmanuel Hospital Association (UK) came together on 1 February 2004 and now operate under the name of Emmanuel Healthcare.

EMMS International is a Company Limited by Guarantee (No. SC 224402) and recognised as a charity in Scotland (No. SC 032327) and for legal purposes it will continue to use the registered company name.

EMMS International has its roots in the former Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society, which was founded in 1841 and is the oldest medical mission society in the western world. EMMS was an organisation which made a significant contribution over many years to the training of student doctors for a lifetime of service in the mission field. It was also well known for its pioneering work in offering free medical care to the citizens of Edinburgh and for its commitment overseas with the Nazareth Hospital in Israel, the Victoria Hospital, Damascus, Syria and the Agra Training Institution in India.

Activities
Over the last few years EMMS International has developed partnership links with a number of indigenous organisations and is involved with:

  • International Nepal Fellowship in the mid-west region of Nepal, at its TB & Leprosy clinic in Surkhet. EMMS is providing funds to build a primary healthcare clinic in Awalching, a very remote village in the hills above Surkhet.

  • In Malawi, EMMS International is in partnership with CCAP (Church of Central Africa Presbyterian) at their hospitals in Ekwendeni, Livingstonia and Mulanje where equipment is supplied and staff offered training. At the School of Nursing in Ekwendeni EMMS is building a hostel for male student nurses, has just completed the building of a tutor’s house and has supplied textbooks and resource materials for the students.

  • In India, EMMS International is in partnership with Dr Stephen Alfred from Thane and is funding the purchase of land and the building of a primary healthcare clinic in the Dolkan area. EMMS is also supporting his AIDS programme by funding the building of a 5-bedded hospice in Thane, for the terminally ill.

  • In India, EMMS International was in partnership with EHA and funded the Sahyog project in the slums of New Delhi.

  • In Israel, EMMS International supports the work of The Nazareth Hospital EMMS, through its annual sponsored bike rides and treks

  • With the merger with EHA (UK), EMMS International, operating as Emmanuel Healthcare, has now taken on board prayer support and funding support in the UK, for EHA work in India. Emmanuel Healthcare brings a solid mission-focused entity, with a strong emphasis on targeted, project-managed, partnership activity based on a strong infrastructure.

Why we exist
Emmanuel Healthcare exists to “preach the gospel and heal the sick” and is working for - "healthcare in a holistic sense for deprived people - where God is with us, in what we say and do". Its vision may be summed up as “to be a vibrant international healthcare, development and support agency which derives its strength from a commitment to serve Jesus Christ.”

Core Values
Emmanuel Healthcare believes in these core values, as God-given standards, against which we should measure ourselves:

We are commissioned: We believe that we are commissioned by Christ, to be his witnesses and agents

We are mission focused: We believe that we are committed to living out in word and action, at home and abroad, the good news about Jesus Christ and the saving grace to be found through him.

We are prayerful: We believe in the need for, and the power of, prayer and that through God’s word, and prayer, God’s direction will be made clear and the power of the Holy Spirit will guide and enable us in our tasks and will motivate us to intercede for and give thanks for every aspect of the work.

We are called to serve: We believe that we are called to serve God by showing high quality care and compassion to suffering people, by offering healthcare, by addressing the needs of the whole person and by helping to develop their communities.

We are stewards: We believe that we are stewards of God’s resources, with a responsibility to use them wisely and according to his desires. We are accountable for our actions and for working with diligence and integrity.

We are international: We believe that by working internationally we can best express the love which God has for people throughout his created world.

We are inter-denominational: We believe that we are given the strength to work together in unity, reflecting the fundamental unity of the body of Christ.” It is through adhering to those values that Emmanuel Healthcare believes it can make a difference to the lives of men, women and children – in India, Africa and the Middle East. Our partnership with EHA in India will be ‘key’ to helping us “to promote the worldwide development of sustainable and improving, holistic healthcare in the spirit and name of Jesus Christ and in transmitting the love of God globally, by word and action.”
