EHA Palliative Care Reporting Meeting 2016

Palliative Care teams from 8 EHA units and Shalom EHA Project, along with the Central Palliative Care team met together for a Reporting meeting from December 5-7, 2016 at Torchbearers in Dehradun.    Dr. Sunil Gokavi, Dr. Sydney Thyle and Mr. Victor Emmanuel represented EHA at the event.

Dr. Ann Thyle did a presentation on the History of Palliative Care in EHA, tracing its beginning in 2009 to its growth over time to 10 services in 6 states of North India and Delhi. This was followed by a reporting by the different units on their activities and impact, challenges faced and plans for the future. Dr. Sunil and Mr. Victor encouraged the group and emphasized the importance of Palliative Care in fulfilling EHA’s mission to care for the marginalized. On the second day, the future directions for Palliative care were discussed as a group, led by Dr. Savita. On the third day, Dr. Ashita presented the findings of her research project on ‘Factors considered important at the end of life’, Mrs. Sarah Victor spoke about the role of Counseling in Palliative Care, Dr. Rajni shared about the Shalom experience with Holistic Care and Ms Leela Pradhan took a session on Networking in Palliative Care.

There was a Farewell Program for Dr. Ann Thyle by the Palliative Care Department on 6th December. Staff from each unit expressed their gratitude to Dr. Ann for investing in their lives and building them and their teams on a professional and personal level. EHA’s Palliative Care Service is grateful to Dr. Ann for her untiring service and excellent leadership in pioneering Palliative Care in rural north India and for developing the program to one that is internationally recognized for its quality services to the poor and marginalized.
